Privacy policy

This policy explains what information is and isn't processed when you use Volo, and by whom. It describes how the site works as of the date below.

Last updated

Summary

  • Files aren't uploaded or stored. File data flows directly between the two browsers.
  • Volo has no accounts, and it doesn't collect your name or email address unless you email us.
  • To connect two devices, a public signaling server and STUN servers process connection details such as IP addresses.
  • Vercel measures page views and performance. Google Analytics is optional and loads only after you accept it.
  • Room codes, filenames, file details and shared text are never sent to analytics providers.

Information we don't collect

  • The contents of files you send or receive.
  • Text messages you share between devices.
  • Accounts, names, email addresses or phone numbers. Volo has no sign-up. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use them only to reply.

Information processed to make transfers work

Connecting two browsers directly requires some information to be shared with the services and devices involved:

  • The public PeerJS signaling server receives the room code, which is used as a connection ID. It also receives connection metadata, such as the IP addresses and ports your device can be reached on. It never receives file contents or text messages.
  • Google STUN servers see your IP address when your browser asks them for its public network address.
  • The other device in the room learns your IP address, which is how direct WebRTC connections work. It also receives what you choose to send: file names, sizes, types and contents, plus any text you share.

Analytics

Volo uses Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand how the site is used and how quickly it loads. This covers pages visited, the referring page, approximate performance measurements and general device information, such as device type and browser.

If you accept Google Analytics, Volo also measures page views and anonymous product milestones such as creating or joining a room, connecting a peer, and starting or completing a transfer. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies to distinguish visits. It does not load or receive any data before you accept it. The GA4 property uses a two-month event-data retention period.

Before either analytics integration receives a room page view, the address is reduced to /room/[id]. Query strings and URL fragments are removed. Custom events never include room codes, transfer IDs, peer IDs, filenames, file sizes or types, shared text, or raw error messages.

You can change or withdraw your Google Analytics choice at any time using “Cookie preferences” in the footer. Withdrawing consent stops Google tracking, removes the Google Analytics cookies Volo can access, and reloads the page. Vercel's analytics products continue to operate without cookies.

Hosting logs

Volo is hosted on Vercel. To serve the site, Vercel processes standard request data, such as your IP address, browser user agent and the pages requested. Volo's own code has no API routes and writes no server logs of its own.

Cookies and local storage

  • Google Analytics sets first-party analytics cookies only after you explicitly accept it.
  • If you switch between light and dark mode, the choice is saved in your browser's local storage under p2p-theme. Your Google Analytics preference is stored under volo-analytics-consent-v1.
  • A service worker caches only Volo's own public pages and assets, so the site loads faster and works offline. Room pages, third-party scripts, files and messages are excluded.

You can remove all of this at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.

Data retention

Volo stores no transfer data on any server. A room's transfer history and received text live only in the open page's memory and are cleared when the page is reloaded or closed. Files you accept are saved on your own device, where you control them.

The third parties listed below keep the data they process according to their own policies. Emails you send us stay in the maintainer's inbox until they are deleted.

Third-party infrastructure

  • Vercel hosts the site and provides cookie-free Web Analytics and Speed Insights.
  • PeerJS provides the public signaling server that introduces the two devices.
  • Google provides the optional, consent-gated Analytics service and the STUN servers that help devices find a route to each other.

Fonts are bundled with the site when it is built, so your browser doesn't request them from a font service.

Changes to this policy

If Volo's behavior changes, this policy will be updated and the “Last updated” date above will change. For details on how the connection is protected, see the security overview.
